Back in March, we published an article on Internet-based news-mapping services (with a totally unnecessary tangent on La Femme Nikita). We also included a list of superior sources for global news stories without the mapping metaphor.

Silobreaker uniquely belongs on both the news-mapping and best-of-the-best, global news-aggregator lists.

Silobreaker organizes news by “global issue” categories, such as conflicts, terrorism, and strategic resources; and allows you to track current news by geographic region. (The site also maintains separate sections on current news in the topics of science & technology and business — in which you can track global news by industry.)

Finally, Silobreaker’s “hotspot search” function allows you to create a bespoke map based on your own news searches.

We will be adding Silobreaker to our list of recommended sites in our earlier entry, and to our normal rotation. Always good to know the mood of, say, the Czech Republic with regard to the United States’ plan to extend a missile shield over Poland. Because otherwise people might actually talk to us at cocktail parties. ♦
